Beyond the screen: breaking the fourth wall in cinema

I graduated in 2021 at IULM University in Milan with a thesis namedĀ "Beyond the screen: breaking the fourth wall in cinema", after attending the Creative Writing Laboratory with Professor and writer Antonio Scurati.

In a journey from the theater to the early cinema, moving on to the most recent films and tv series: some characters break the fourth wall in many different ways, and in just as many ways they create an unique relationship with the viewer to whom they want - orĀ must - speak .

We cannot speak with absolute precision about the history of the fourth wall, but it would be more appropriate to reflect on its philosophy.

An important part of this project was the creation of an original short story where I applied what I studied and learned about the fourth wall: I created William, a young boy that, one day, discovers to be living in a world with a narrator who knows exactly who he is, what he's done and what he's going to do.

The movies "Stranger than Fiction" and "The Truman Show" were a great inspiration for this short story, that I wrote and completed by scripting some of its parts.
